A hybrid integrated-optics interferometer

Abstract

This paper discusses a hybrid system for an integrated-optics interferometer, in which part of the surface wave (mode) is extracted from a waveguide, is reflected from an object, and is again introduced into the waveguide, transforming back into a mode. Information concerning the displacement of the object is contained in the intensity distribution of the interfering waves. An advantage of the system is that it allows all the elements of an interferometer system (other than the object) to be made in a miniature monolithic form. An estimate of the parameters and a calculation showed that this was technologically possible to implement the device (the transmittance is about 0.2, and the contrast is greater than 0.5).
