This paper proposes, substantiates, and applies transmission-type volume phase holographic gratings to measure the wavelength of quasi-monochromatic radiation. The measurement procedure consists of using a goniometric device to determine the diffraction angle of the unknown wave at a grating calibrated in spatial period. The requirements on diffraction gratings and calibration-and-measurement procedures are analyzed to determine how well they achieve the maximum accuracy. Regardless of the accuracy with which the zero of the goniometer is set, the calibration of holographic gratings is achieved by using two lasers with reliably set wavelengths. The extent to which the temperature of the grating affects the stability of its spatial period is determined. The technique thus developed is tested by measuring the temperature deviation of the radiation frequency of an injection laser.
