Abstract
This paper discusses the refraction and reflection of an electromagnetic ultrashort pulse at the interface of two dielectrics on which a thin film of metamaterial is placed. The optical properties of the film are described on the basis of a model of two sorts of oscillators, one of which corresponds to the linear response to the magnetic field of the pulse, while the other corresponds to the nonlinear response to the electric field. Numerical analysis shows that it is possible for an oscillatory electromagnetic echo to appear in an inhomogeneous ensemble of meta-atoms. The observed coherent effects can be used to study the optical properties of films of metamaterials.
