Abstract

This paper discusses questions of the design and fabrication of wide-angle optical systems for helmet-mounted displays (HDs). The requirements imposed on such systems are determined and analyzed. Questions of the design of the key elements of HDs--spectral and polarization combiners--are considered. We have proposed synthesized volume holograms as spectral combiners. The optical and operational properties of holographic optical elements based on volume holograms written by recording a volume interference pattern by the Denisyuk method are analyzed and compared. Color distortions of exterior space observed through a combiner are investigated. Questions of synthesizing a projection objective are considered. The results of the design, analysis, and testing of optical systems for HDs are presented.
