Abstract
The logic of the development of modern science and engineering makes it necessary to master the short-wavelength region of the optical spectrum. Achievements in this area result from progress in modern technology that strongly affects all spheres of human activity, improving them and fundamentally altering the life of society as a whole. Shortening the wavelength of radiation not only allows it to act locally and is necessary for the miniaturization of high-tech articles but also, beginning at the boundary of the vacuum ultraviolet (VUV), maximizes the efficiency with which light interacts with matter.
