Abstract

Estimates are obtained for the excitation-relaxation time in the electron subsystem of a metal when it is irradiated with femtosecond laser pulses having energy densities close to the breakdown threshold. The dependences of the relaxation time on the parameters of the laser pulse and on the distance to the irradiated surface are investigated.
