Abstract

This paper describes a method of converting a 2D image of a scene into a stereoscopic 3D image. The method is based on approximating the images of the objects that compose it by a set of planes, followed by decomposition of the image onto these planes. One then calculates an axonometric projection and depth map of each plane, using for this purpose a priori information available to the viewer concerning the images of the objects. After this, the axonometric projections of the approximating planes are “assembled,” and a scale conversion is carried out, as a result of which a 3D image of the scene is observed. The last stage of the described method involves forming a stereo pair and showing a stereo image on a display screen with a given aspect angle and observation distance. The exposition is accompanied by a demonstration of images obtained by the given method.
