Welcome to The Illuminator: OSA's New Quarterly Librarian Newsletter

Over the last year, OSA has been focused on developing new tools and services that will better enable you to easily and effectively access the data and information you need to manage your OSA journal collections.

Late last year, for example, we launched the OSA Library Resource Center. We hope this new "one-stop- shopping" website provides you with a quick and easy way to review your current holdings, retrieve your COUNTER usage statistics, change your IP addresses, and much, much more.

Today we are introducing The Illuminator—OSA's new e-newsletter written specifically for you, our valued library customers. The goal of this quarterly e-newsletter is to share news, updates, and tips on OSA's products and services that we hope in turn will enable you to better assist your patrons. We hope you will find it useful.

As always, we welcome your feedback! If there's something you'd like for us to feature in an upcoming issue of The Illuminator, please do let us know by emailing elec@osa.org or by contacting your OSA account representative.

In the News: Congratulations to James King

James King, a member of OSA's Library Advisory Committee, was named a 2011 Fellow by the Special Libraries Association (SLA). As the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Library's Information Architect in Bethesda, MD, King provides service to over 5,000 clinicians/researchers and 15,000 support personnel. His recent focus has been on creating Virtual Research Environments (VREs). Previously, he spent over 18 years at the Naval Research Laboratory's (NRL) Ruth H. Hooker Research Library, using his IT background to transform the NRL Research Library from a print-based library to a cutting-edge digital library. King has served on several industry library advisory boards, has received the SLA Innovations in Technology Award, and was the 2010 President of the DC/SLA Chapter. He is the Convener of the SLA Information Futurist Caucus.

Track and Find Content Faster in OSA's Online Journals

The breadth of content published on OSA's digital library, Optics InfoBase, is large and growing—with over 185,000 articles and proceedings from over 310 conferences included year-to-date.

Recognizing that it's not always easy to navigate our digital library, we've recently launched some new features to our platform to help you and your patrons more easily discover and access newly published OSA content.

Our new features include:
  • Personalized content tracking via our free My InfoBase service. The "My InfoBase" feature allows users to choose topics that they are interested in tracking, and then using these selections, create their own customized journals, table of contents, alerts and more. Registration is free and starts with a short sign-up process.
  • Easier navigation of content on journal home pages: Several of OSA's journals have a new web interface that allows users to easily preview the latest articles, scan the topics in the current issue, catch up on feature issues, and much more—and all without leaving the journal homepage. Check out our new interface on:
  • Open access to a select group of subscription-based articles available via Spotlight on Optics. This new feature highlights noteworthy journal articles that have been specially selected by OSA topical editors due to their particularly interesting content. Each Spotlight article also includes some commentary (e.g., perspective on the application of the science, viewpoint on the research) from a panelist of outside researchers that provides added value to the article content.

Manage Your Subscriptions Online with the New OSA Library Resource Center

Now you can easily access information and tools to help you manage and learn more about your institution's subscriptions, usage and IP addresses, as well as about other key information related to OSA's journals.

Download the New OPN iPhone/iPad App

While primarily a benefit for OSA member subscribers, many of whom are your patrons, OSA is pleased to announce the launch of a new iPhone/iPad app for the society's monthly magazine, Optics & Photonics News (OPN). With articles written by top engineers, Nobel-prize-winning scientists, and business strategists, OPN provides in-depth coverage of optics. Now readers can keep up with OPN with this new app that allows them to:

  • Easily read text that has been formatted for small screens
  • Download issues and maintain a portable archive
  • Access dynamic feeds featuring news, career info, and social media
  • Bookmark favorite articles and share them with colleagues
The app is free and available now through iTunes. Readers can also visit the iTunes store and search "OPN" to download it. Note that the OPN app is the first of many to come from OSA. We plan to launch additional mobile viewing technology for our journal content in the near future.
