Optical Interconnects (Invited Only)

This Focus Issue, which comprises solicited papers only, will be based on research contributions in the field of optical interconnects, which are aimed at relieving the technological bottleneck of their electrical counterparts at much reduced power consumption. Due to the large bandwidth and long reach offered by their optical channels, optical interconnection technologies continue to play an even more important role in scaling up the performance of various network segments that range from long-distance inter data-center connections to short-reach rack-to-rack communication as well as on-board and chip-to-chip links. Researchers have recently focused on these short reach optical inter-connection networks looking for the best tradeoffs between the performance and cost.
Topics covered in this special issue include:
- Enabling components and device technologies (optical fiber, silicon photonics/nanophotonics, polymer waveguides, light sources, SOI component integration and system-on-chip modules);
- Advances in sub-systems and transmission system technology (DSP in short-reach transmission and optical interconnection system level progress);
- Networking and its applications including: data center interconnection network architectures, metric optical switching for data center interconnection networks and short-reach access networks.
Manuscripts must be prepared according to the usual standards for submission to Optics Express and must be uploaded through OSA's electronic submission system, (/oe/journal/oe/author.cfm), specifying from the drop-down menu that the manuscript is for the Focus Issue on Optical Interconnects. Manuscripts will undergo the same peer review as other papers submitted to the journal. The standard Optics Express publication charges will apply to all published articles.
