Abstract

A versatile and simple passive optical technique for quenching gain in laser amplifiers on picosecond and subpicosecond time scales is described. The scheme can be used to eliminate undesirable postpulses or to reduce laser pulse widths. A 30-fold suppression of satellite pulses from a synchronously pumped amplified dye laser is demonstrated.
