Abstract

We exploit the excitation of electromagnetic surface waves on high-quality dielectric multilayers to measure the very low extinction coefficient of the structures, with a resolution down to 4·107 and in a simple optical configuration. The effect of exposition to a rhodamine 6G solution in water and ethanol is also reported, including dye adsorption in the layers and bleaching upon resonant excitation.

  11. The samples can also fit the numerical aperture of a microscope objective (NA=1.46), for application in fluorescence microscopy in the water environment. For such a last application the number of 1DPC layers has been chosen to match the angular divergence of the illumination beam generated by focusing the excitation light on the back focal plane of the microscope objective.
