Abstract
We report on a proof of concept for a compact supercontinuum source for the mid-infrared wavelength range based on a microchip laser and nonlinear conversion inside a selenide-based optical fiber. The spectrum extends from 3.74 to 4.64 μm at from the peak and 3.65 to 4.9 μm at from the peak; emitting beyond the wavelength range that periodically poled lithium niobate (PPLN) starts to display a power penalty. Wavelength conversion occurs inside the core of a single-mode fiber, resulting in a high-brightness emission source. A maximum average power of 5 mW was demonstrated, but the architecture is scalable to higher average powers.
