Pitchfork bifurcation and all-optical digital signal processing with a coupled-element bistable system

Abstract

An optical bistable system composed of coupled nonlinear elements is proposed. This system features optical bistability without hysteresis, which appears through pitchfork bifurcation. It is shown theoretically that a flip-flop operation and a complete set of logic-gate characteristics can be achieved easily on an all-optical basis.
