Optical multistability in a nonlinear cavityless system

Abstract

We describe an all-optical cavityless multistable system that does not necessitate coherent beams. The experimental demonstration showing bistability was done by using a strontium barium niobate crystal that has a nonlinear birefringence of thermal origin.
