Abstract
Near the total-internal-reflection state, the increasing tunneling of the optical field into a nonlinear thin film gives rise to large intensity-dependent phase-shift effects, regardless of whether the incident field will finally achieve a transmissive state. We present a quantitative calculation of the dynamics of this effect and some qualitative experimental results.
