Abstract
We demonstrate that a twin-core coupler that is composed of nonlinear material with gain behaves like a tapered (linear) coupler and also has a beam-splitting ratio that is optically tunable. This conceptual approach reveals a new class of twin-core all-optical devices that exchange power adiabatically between the cores rather than by the more familiar method of resonance coupling or phase matching.
