Strain distribution and optical propagation in tension-coiled fibers

Abstract

The distribution of strain in an optical fiber subjected to a combination of bending and longitudinal strain is calculated. From the strain distribution, the perturbation of the refractive index is derived. The birefringence at an arbitrary position in the fiber cross section is calculated.
