Photopic contrast sensitivity without foveal vision

Abstract

Sine-wave contrast sensitivity is greatly reduced when the subject is prevented from using his fovea by a stabilized obscuration. For example, with a 3° obscuring stripe, his sensitivity is one third of normal. However, the foveal-deprivation effect seems to be independent of the spatial frequency of the stimulus, which provides an important constraint on models of retinal inhomogeneity.
