Abstract

The lifetime of the 1G4 level and the 1G43H5 emission of Pr3+ are measured under changing temperatures. The temperature dependence of gain characteristics of Pr3+-doped fiber amplifiers is analyzed theoretically for the first time to our knowledge on the basis of the lifetime and emission cross section. Signal output power degradation resulting from an increase in temperature is clarified, and the pump power margin to compensate for this signal output power degradation is obtained.
