Abstract

A degenerate parametric amplifier at the transmitter can improve the power efficiency of a small-signal phase-modulated optical transmission system by acting as a phase amplifier. For a parametric power gain <i>H</i>, the total transmitter power requirement is reduced by a factor of <i>H</i><sup>2</sup> compared with that of a conventional phase-modulated system.
