Abstract
At fluence levels below that for multiphoton dissociation, it is shown that for SF6 the number of photons absorbed per molecule increases dramatically as the number of collisions with a nonabsorbing partner increases. In particular, at 70 mJ/cm2, the average number of photons absorbed per SF6 molecule in a xenon diluent went from <3 at 1.5 Torr Xe added to more than 12 at 100 Torr (SF6 pressure constant at 0.1 Torr).
