Abstract
We report a leaky-mode resonant absorber fashioned as one-dimensional nanopatterned ultra-thin films. This simple structure exhibits optical absorbance of in the 300–750 nm wavelength band, which is an increase relative to a comparable planar reference structure. The transverse-magnetic (TM) polarized light in the band is nearly totally absorbed. Applying a backside metal reflector raises the absorbance farther to .
