Abstract

Statistical analysis of deep random-phase screens requires the measurement of optical phase fluctuations in excess of 2π. This Letter describes a suitable interferometer with two photodetectors and bidirectional fringe counting. Probability distributions and temporal- and spatial-correlation functions of phase fluctuations were measured on heated plumes and jets in surrounding colder fluid.
