Fiber-optic microbend sensors: sensitivity as a function of distortion wavelength

Abstract

The attenuation of optical power in multimode fibers with parabolic-index profiles has been analyzed as a function of the distortion wavelength in microbend sensors with sharp ridges. In agreement with the theory, measurements show that attenuation peaks of almost equal strength originate from the fundamental and the odd higher harmonics in the distortion spectrum.
