Optical Materials Express Feature Announcement

Mid-IR Photonic Materials

The rapid-publication, open-access, electronic OSA journal, Optical Materials Express (OMEx), is planning a feature issue on mid-infrared (mid-IR) optical materials and their device applications to be published in September 2013. We are soliciting original contributed papers on recent advances made in the area of mid-infrared optical properties of materials.

The mid-infrared spectral band (2.5 to 10μm) is technologically important due to its relation to an array of applications including thermal imaging, spectroscopic sensing, free-space communications and infrared countermeasures. The field of mid-IR photonics, which spans the generation, manipulation, transmission and detection of mid-IR radiation, has seen significant progress in the past decade, largely spurred by the rapid development of novel materials and device architectures operating in this wavelength range. Examples include the design and fabrication of quantum and interband cascade laser sources, growth of unconventional narrow bandgap semiconductor nanostructures, synthesis of new IR glasses and optical ceramics in bulk, planar and fiber form, as well as exploration of nonlinear optical interactions in mid-IR transparent materials.

Topics to be covered include:

  • Novel active and passive optical materials and device structures enabled by these materials for mid-IR lasers, LEDs, fibers, wavelength converters, and detectors, in both fiber-optic and planar forms
  • New mid-IR material and component processing methods, such as narrow bandgap semiconductor growth, infrared optical materials including active and passive infrared glasses and ceramics, and novel (nano)fabrication of guided wave structures in both planar and fiber forms
  • Advanced optical property characterization and related instrument development - absorption, emission, modulation, and nonlinear optical processes in the mid-IR spectral range
  • Emerging applications leveraging mid-IR photon-matter interactions in novel materials and structures, including but not limited to cascade lasing, nonlinear wavelength generation and conversion, spectroscopic sensing, non-invasive optical imaging, and LIDAR

All papers need to present original, previously unpublished work, and will be subject to the normal standards and peer-review process of the journal. Papers will appear in the Optical Materials Express journal and will be published online upon acceptance.

Manuscripts must be prepared according to the usual standards for submission to Optical Materials Express and must be uploaded through OSA's electronic submission system. When submitting, please specify that the manuscript is for the Mid-IR Photonic Materials feature issue (choose from the drop-down menu). Please note that submissions to this feature issue incur the normal OMEx publication fee.
