Coherent response to optical excitation in a strongly absorbing rare-earth ion-doped crystal

The experiment on the area theorem is state of the art and is complemented by high-quality theoretical analysis. The research is interesting from a fundamental point of view and may be useful in the context of optical quantum storage. The paper is well written and should be accessible to a wide audience.
