Increasing trap stiffness with position clamping in holographic optical tweezers
Spotlight summary: A closed-loop holographic optical tweezers system capable of manipulating multiple particles in three dimensions is reported. A spatial light modulator with a refresh rate of 203 Hz generates the optical trap, so that feedback from a camera can be used to modify the optical trap in response to the particles' motion. This active trap correction can lead to a reduction of more than 40% in the variance of the particles' position, as shown by experiments in which as many as three, 5-µm beads were trapped.
