Spotlight summary: The study of the nonlinear optical properties of graphene has received a lot of attention recently, given its potential applications in photonic devices, including mode-lockers, optical switches, and optical limiters. However, to date most of the studies on this topic have largely been experimental. Therefore, the significant theoretical component of this well-written article is a significant highlight. The authors provide both a theoretical model and an experimental characterization of the ultrafast saturable absorption in graphene, grown epitaxially on a transparent, wide-bandgap semiconductor SiC substrate. It is shown that graphene possesses excellent saturable absorption properties with low saturation intensity, controllable saturation depth, ultrafast recovery time, near symmetric spatio-temporal narrowing, and high damage threshold.
