Precise balancing of viscous and radiation forces on a particle in liquid-filled photonic bandgap fiberPublished in Optics Letters, Vol. 34 Issue 23, pp.3674-3676 (2009) |
Spotlight summary: The described single-mode photonic crystal fiber (PCF), which has a liquid-filled hollow core, is a very nice development that allows laser radiation force control of cells and droplets in a confined laser beam. The authors present an interesting apparatus for single-particle trapping and manipulation inside a hollow-core PCF and apply it to measure the drag forces of a counter flow. The technique has potential applications in microfluidics for single-particle measurement.
