Abstract

This month’s edition of the journal Applied Optics is a special issue devoted to the contributions of Emmett Leith, who passed away unexpectedly in December 2005. To honor the memory of my dear friend and colleague, I provide here my account of the significance of his work and how I came to invent computer-generated holography.
